Akon’s breakthrough came in 2004 with the release of his single “Locked Up”, which peaked at #8 on the Billboard charts and attracted the attention of the public. He  spent a lot of his childhood in Senegal, but Akon’s troublesome youth and supposed three years that he had to spend in jail made him realize that he wanted to pursue music as his career. He then met up with record producer Devyne Stephens, who was not only his mentor but helped him record songs that soon attracted the attention of SRC Records. Akon then began working on collaborations with artists from overseas, and therefore expanded his audience. Soon Akon released his debut album called “Trouble” that produced six singles, one of which “Locked Up” became a major hit, while another song “Lonely” peaked at #4 in the United States.

With the success of his debut album, Akon became a well-known face in the entertainment industry and in turn began increasing his net worth. Two years later, Akon established his first record label – “Kon Live Distribution” – and around the same time released his second studio album, “Konvicted” that peaked at the top of the charts and sold over three million copies in the United States alone. In addition to his solo projects, Akon was more open to collaborating with other artists.
