She took piano, guitar, and voice lessons as a child, and later went to the Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax where she sang in the rock band called The October Game. Following the band’s first concert, McLachlan was offered a move to Vancouver to join the Nettwerk record label, but being only 17, her parents wanted her to stay for the next two years to finish high school and study for a year at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
In 1988, Sarah moved to Vancouver and signed a contract with Nettwerk without having a single song written before.
