In July 2001, Baron succeeded Matthew V. Storin as editor of the Boston Globe. Baron’s editorial choices at The Globe shifted the coverage of the newspaper of international events to locally-focused investigative journalism. The coverage by the Globe of the sexual abuse scandal in the Boston Catholic earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 2003.
