He returned to the Herald as editor in 2000 and directed the coverage of many key stories, including Elián González’s return to Cuba and the 2000 elections.
In July 2001, Baron succeeded Matthew V. Storin as editor of the Boston Globe. Baron’s editorial choices at The Globe shifted the coverage of the newspaper of international events to locally-focused investigative journalism. The coverage by the Globe of the sexual abuse scandal in the Boston Catholic earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 2003.
