He signed a contract with Elektra Records in 1998, but his album was never released, the label closed, and after A Tribe Called Quest’s breakup, Consequence looked for other collaborators in support for his debut album.

Consequence was involved in some controversies with fellow rappers such as Pusha T and Joe Budden. In 2011, he released the song called “The Plagurist Society” in which he questions Pusha T’s coke-dealing raps, the latter responding on Chicago’s 107.5 WGCI’s “The Morning Riot” stating that nobody cared about Consequence. Soon after, Consequence recorded the song “Everybody Told Me 2 (Straighten It Out)”, dissing Pusha T, Kanye West, and GOOD Music. Unsurprisingly, Consequence left GOOD Music in 2011 and later launched his own label called Band Camp Records.

In 2013, Consequence assaulted fellow rapper and reality TV show actor Joe Budden during an episode of the “Love & Hip Hop” show, sneaking up behind Budden and pinching him on the back of the head, after which he ran away, with Budden’s ex-girlfriend pursuing and striking him too. Budden wanted to retaliation, and he openly admitted during Angie Martinez’s radio show that he would respond to Consequence’s assault, which he did in a cell phone-captured encounter some time later.
