However, he dropped out of studies after an argument with his professor, and on advice from a friend tried himself as an actor. Soon he earned an apprenticeship at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, then a few years later he moved to London, and attended the Drama Studio London. While there, he not only improved as an actor, but also learned new talents, including accents and dialects, which only helped him in his later career. He then re-joined the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and was then a founding member of the San Jose Repertory Theatre.

Charles on-screen career began in the 1980s in the film “The Brotherhood of Justice” (1986) with Keanu Reeves and Kiefer Sutherland in lead roles, and the same year he appeared with Bill Ackridge and Al Blair in “Hard Traveling”. By the end of the 1980s he also had parts in “Matlock” (1989), and “Midnight Caller” (1989). Before he became the voice of Mario, and other characters of the popular game, Charles featured in films “Mom” (1991), “The Last of His Tribe” (1992), and “Bay City Story” (1992). In 1994 he was hired by Nintendo, and became the voice of Mario on trade shows, and later featured in every video game made in the franchise, which is around 100 titles. His only role in the 2000s was the one of City Councilman in “The Californians”, with Kate Mara and Noah Wyle as leads.
