James Timothy Daly is the youngest of four children of actors Mary Hope and James Daly; the actress Tyne Daly is his older sister. Daly went to The Putney School, where he developed an interest in acting and so studied it. He later attended Bennington College in Vermont and began his professional career while was there, graduating in 1979 with Bachelors degree in Theatre and Literature. He then returned to New York to study acting and singing.

Daly actually debuted on the stage when he was only seven years old, in Jean Kerr’s play “Jenny Kissed Me” (1963), along with his parents and two sisters. “An Enemy of the People”, was Tim’s first TV appearance in 1966, starring his father James. Daly also had a role in “Made in Heaven” (1987), starring Timothy Hutton and Kelly McGillis, and another leading role in the David Chase series “Almost Grown” (1988), but the show lasted only one season.
