Stan is of Czech ancestry, as his grandfather moved from Czechoslovakia in 1946; he is one of three children to Wolfram, farmer and Isabelle, educator. Stan went to the Rudolf Steiner School in Crissier, but left school when he turned 15 in order to pursue his career in tennis, although he continued his education through the French organization CNED.
He entered the international junior tennis events at age 14, and in 2003 he won the French Open Junior championships, thanks to which result he ended at No. 7 on the junior list.
As early as 2002, Stan turned pro, and in the first three years he managed to reach the top 60 players, ending at 51st place.
