Sergio initially worked as an accountant for Deloitte & Touche for three years, then moved to Lawson Mardon Group, and the following year to Glenex Industries as Executive Vice President. In 1990, he became the Chief Financial Officer at Acklands for two years, followed by serving as the Chief Financial Officer of the Lawson Group for another two years. In 1994, Alusuisse Lonza acquired the Lawson group, and he would work there until 2000, becoming the CEO of the company in 1997. His net worth was rising substantially.

In 2002, he became the CEO of SGS S.A. Seven years later Sergio decided to buy a 20% stake of Chrysler via Fiat Group, at a time Chrysler was emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and he would then become the CEO. His stake in the company would increase and the two companies would eventually merge.

Sergio is well known for his unusual management style, preferring to deal directly with employees instead of typical communication via a secretary. He also has a more collegial style, opting for a fourth floor office instead of a penthouse. He has won numerous awards throughout his career including The Deming Cup 2011, the Dwight D.
