Nadya Suleman married Marco Gutierrez in 1996, but they separated in 2000 and divorced in 2006. Gutierrez admitted that he filed for divorce because they couldn’t have their own children. However, Natalie started IVF treatments in 1997 and eventually gave birth to her first child, a son named Elijah. The treatments were under the supervision of Dr. Michael Kamrava, who then helped to deliver Nadya first daughter, Amerah, in 2002.

Still, Suleman wanted more children and received further treatment, which resulted in three more pregnancies including fraternal twins. Her troubles began when she insisted that the remaining embryos be transferred to her uterus, so she ended carrying six more embryos inside her. In January 2009, Suleman gave birth to octuplets, and immediately caught the public eye with her decision to have more children. Nadya was unemployed at the time, but she stated that she could support her children and that she was planning to return to the school.

In March 2009, Suleman bought a house in La Habra, California, and although she was concerned about losing custody of the babies, all of the children were home with their mother and grandmother by April. The media gave her the name “Octomom” already in the first week following the childbirth, so Suleman became a media figure and appeared in many television shows. In February 2009, she had an interview with Ann Curry, in which Nadya claimed that she is not selfish and that she is able to provide a better future for her children. Suleman then appeared alongside civil right lawyer Gloria Allred on “Dr. Phil”; Allred had a lot of complaints about Nadya’s qualities as a mother and homemaker.

In July 2009, Suleman struck a deal with the Los Angeles Superior Court which guaranteed $250 per day to each of her children to participate in a reality show. However, Gloria Allred scuppered Natalie’s plans and the show never saw daylight. In February 2010, Natalie featured in the issue of Star, while in April she appeared in “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Idol Gives Back”, denying that she had plastic surgery and also rubbished rumours that she had agreed to star in a porn movie. However, after posing semi-nude for the British magazine Closer, Suleman filed for personal bankruptcy in April 2012, stating that she had $50,000 in assets but around $1 million in debts.

Her house in La Habra was set to go up for auction, and Natalie checked into the Chapman House Treatment Center in Los Angeles in October 2012, to receive rehabilitation for stress, anxiety, and exhaustion. Following her release from Chapman’s, Suleman made an adult movie called “Octomom Home Alone”, in order to raise money and support her children. Unlike other home videos, this has solo scenes with the aid of sex toys, without any males or other females. The movie received four AVN Award nominations and won Best Celebrity Video, but that didn’t help Natalie to earn a lot of money. In 2014, Suleman made her movie debut in Manzie Jones’ horror “666 the Devil’s Child”.
