Josh Koscheck spent his childhood in Waynesburg, where he started to wrestle when he was only five years old. There, he received his elementary and high school education, after which he enrolled at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, as he received an athletic scholarship, and he continued wresting career as well as his education. He graduated with a BA degree in Criminal Justice.
While in his third year at the University, Josh became the NCAA Division I Champion in the 174lb weight class, finishing the season without a loss in recording 42 victories. Furthermore, he received the PSAC Wrestler of the Year award three times.

Josh`s professional career began with the first season of the Ultimate Fighter in 2005, in the middleweight category. In his debut, Josh won the fight against Chris Leben via unanimous decision. However, his second match brought his first loss, against Diego Sanchez. His first official match was held in the Ultimate Finale against Chris Sanford, who Josh defeated by KO in the first round.
His next fight was also successful, winning against the UFC veteran Pete Spratt, at the UFC Fight Night event, held in Las Vega, Nevada in 2005.
