Oliver is the son of educators Jim and Carole, both of whom came from Liverpool. He graduated from Christ’s College at the University of Cambridge in 1998. After finishing school, he started doing stand-up, performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as part of “The Comedy Zone” back in 2001. Four years later, Oliver and fellow comedian Andy Zaltzman started the radio show “The Political Animal”, from which Oliver began to gain popularity. He then toured around the city, doing stand-up in clubs and later on to bigger venues. He became a guest panelist in the satirical panel show “Mock the Week” from 2005 to 2006. Oliver then had a stand-up show called “John Oliver: Terrifying Times which was aired on Comedy Central in 2008 and eventually sold in DVDs. In 2010, he hosted “John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show” which lasted four seasons.

In 2006, with the help of Ricky Gervais, the 38-year old comedian became the British senior correspondent of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”, eventually moving to America and becoming a writer for the show from 2007-2013. He was nominated and won three times at the Emmys for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series” as well as the Writer’s Guild Awards for “Comedy/Variety – (Including Talk) Series”. In 2013, Oliver took over as the guest host of the show for eight weeks while Stewart directed the movie “Rosewater”. Three months later, Oliver was finally given his own late-night show “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” which premiered on Home Box Office (HBO) in 2014. It was a satirical show with no holds barred in discussing politics, news, and current events. The success of the show, which has earned him another Writer’s Guild Award, led to its renewal for two more seasons in 2015, each with 35 episodes. His net worth is still growing.
