He took guitar lessons from jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and jazz pianist Lennie Tristano, and soon started to teach others on his own, His first student was Steve Vai, with whom he later collaborated in the group G3. As he got older, Joe began to feature in rock bands, such as The Squares, and The Greg Kihn Band, but then decided to start a career on his own.
