He became part of the starting line-up during his junior year and earned All-Big East honors, helping Marquette earn their way to the NCAA Tournament, and as a senior continued to perform well.

During the 2011 NBA Draft, Butler was selected as the 30th overall pick by the Chicago Bulls. His initial performance was only minimal due to the lockout, so the following year he joined the NBA Summer League, and performed much better which led the Bulls to extending Butler’s rookie contract.
