Jamaine Ortiz Career

Ortiz won two New England championships and was a 2015 National Golden Gloves silver medalist. He reached the semi-finals of the Olympic trials in 2016. During his amateur career, Ortiz fought several top young fighters.

Moreover, he gained invaluable experience sparring with former World Boxing Association world super featherweight champion Javier Fortuna Ortiz’s success at the professional level comes as no surprise considering that he had a heavily decorated amateur career, which included an impressive 100-14 record and culminated with him reaching the semifinals of the 2016 United States Olympic Trials.  Round 1:  Segawa starts with some long jabs, but Ortiz fires off a series of hard jabs in return. Ortiz lands a solid straight left after Ortiz gets in a nice combination.

 Round 2:  Both men are letting their hands go in the second round and this has been a good fight so far.

Round 3: Ortiz lands a few more good right hooks, but he does allow himself to be backed into the ropes often enough to keep Segawa in the fight. Big end to the round for Ortiz as he lands basically everything he throws.

 Round 4: Segawa blasts Ortiz hard early in the round, scoring two of his best punches of the fight. Ortiz is back in control, landing the jab and a few hooks and slowing Segawa’s early momentum. Jamaine begins to dance with his hands down, tagging Segawa with hard jabs. Ortiz again lands hard at the end of the round.

Round 7: Ortiz lands a series of heavy uppercuts and Segawa roars back with a hook only to be met with an Ortiz right hand. Born on April 26, 1996, Jamaine is now 24 years old. Ortiz, who is of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, was born and raised in Worcester, MA, and is one of seven children. His father passed away when he was 15.

At an early age, Ortiz visited a local boxing gym, which helped him learn a level of discipline.

“I got in some fights as a kid, nothing serious, but my life changed at seven when I first went to the Worcester Boys & Girls Club,” he said. “That’s where I learned how to box, and I’ve been going there ever since.

Away from boxing he has a three-year-old daughter and worked a day job as a full-time union carpenter. He likes to play basketball and to learn new things and is currently reading about the cardiovascular system. He also enjoys spending time with his family.

Oritz grew up in Worcester, spending time in Great Brook Valley and Vernon Hill. When his parents divorced, “I did a lot of back and forth.” Ortiz said his father moved to Florida, where he said he spent one year in elementary school.
