Canfield spent his younger educational years at Linsly Military Institute and matriculated in 1962. He later attended Harvard University from where he graduated with a degree in Chinese History. He also studied at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for his M.Ed. and at the University of Santa Monica for his PhD.

Canfield’s career started as a high school teacher, teaching students at a high school in Chicago, Illinois. He then transitioned to working in different corporate jobs like the Clinton Job Corps Center and W. Clement and Jessie V. Stone Foundation in Chicago. His early years working in the corporate world started his net worth, and became an inspiration for his next career move.

In 1976, Canfield co-authored his first book “100 Ways to Enhance Self-Concept in The Classroom: A Handbook for Teachers and Parents”. He also opened a center in 1978, called the New England Center for Personal and Organizational Development. The center became the start of a new career for Canfield, and son he became a motivational author and speaker, traveling in various states.
