Helen’s father changed their family name to Mirren in the 1950s, and she grew up in what she would describe as an “anti-monarchist” family. While attending primary school at Hamlet Court, she was given her first opportunity to act in a production of “Hansel and Gretel”. Later, she attended St. Bernard’s High School for Girls and continued to appear in productions. After matriculating, she went to New College of Speech and Drama, and by the age of 18 had auditioned for the National Youth Theatre, and was accepted.
Two years later she portrayed Cleopatra in a production of “Antony and Cleopatra”, and Mirren was invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, being cast in plays such as “The Revenger’s Tragedy”, “All’s Well That Ends Well” and “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”. One of Helen’s first television appearances was in a documentary film entitled “Doing Her Own Thing”, which followed her life while in the RSC. She continued in plays, including appearing in West End repertory, doing productions such as “Henry VI”, and “Measure for Measure”.
