After matriculating from high school, McDonald attended the University of Southern California (USC), and then took theatre classes at The Groundlings after graduating. She did a lot of improvisation and comedy projects at the theatre, while following her parents in working to become a licensed realtor.
In the 1990s, Heather started doing a lot more writing work, collaborating with fellow writer/actor Keenan Ivory Wayans. In 2001, she began working for the MTV show “Lyricist Lounge” which lasted for a year. Afterwards, she toured with the Wayans brothers, writing and performing with them as seen in some of their films. She also did regular stand-up comedy shows in Los Angeles, for which she is well known, involving a lot of impressions of female characters. In 2007, she became a writer for “Chelsea Lately” and participated in numerous sketches of the show which would run for seven years, with Heather as the main story producer.
