Gary Owen is an American actor, singer and comic stand-up. His big break came in 1997 on Black Entertainment Television’s stand-up showcase Comic View, after being called “Funniest Serviceman In America.” Owen followed this debut with roles featuring in the movies Daddy Day Care, Little Man, and School. After headlining on cable channel BET and performing at targeted events, such as Shaquille O’Neal’s All-Star Comedy Jam Tour, he has built a very broad African-American following. Gary Owen worked in the US until his famous career in stand-up comedy. Navy as a Master-At-Arms for six years and was in the Presidential Guard of Honor. Owen was dubbed “Funniest Serviceman in America” after a year of stand-up.
He continued to stand up in San Diego, and built a large base of African-American supporters. He went on to win the contest “San Diego’s Funniest Black Comedian” That led to his first appearance on Hollywood’s The Comedy Store. He had auditioned for BET’s Comic View in July 1997. Two performances on the stage for multicultural entertainment earned him his own one-hour Grandstand.
He was chosen from the four “Grandstanders” of the year to be the host at the end of the season. Owen was the first white man ever to host a Comic View. Ebony called Owen “Favorite White Comic by Black America” in April 2011. Owen has created two stand-up DVDs: Breakin ‘Out The Park and Urban Legend, which is now available nationwide.
He was one of Martin Lawrence Presents ‘headliners too: 1st Amendment Stand-Up on Starz. Owen appeared alongside Kevin Hart and Gabrielle Union in the Screen Gems film Think Like a Man-based on Steve Harvey’s book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. Owen has also starred in movies including Rebound, “College,” “Daddy Day Care” and Hillbilly Highway, and has played a recurring role as Zack in Tyler Perry’s TBS show House of Payne. He has starred as Larry in the sitcom “Meet the Blacks.” He has a television series called The Gary Owen Series on BET.
