Christopher James Weidman was born on 17 June 1984, in Baldwin, New York, USA, of Irish and German descent. Chris is a mixed martial artist, currently under the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) organisation, and is best known for ending the seven year, 17 fight undefeated streak of former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. The success he’s had in MMA has raised his net worth to where it is now.

At a young age, Chris became involved in various athletic activities and became especially interested in wrestling. He attended Baldwin Senior High School, and wrestled while at the school becoming a Nassau County and New York State champion. He attended Nassau Community College and earned All-American honors before moving to Hofstra, becoming an NYS Collegiate Champion. Weidman earned multiple awards and honors, placing 3rd in the NCAA tournament during his senior year, before graduating with a degree in psychology.

Chris then went on to improve his wrestling at the BJJ Academy, even winning competitions in the process. His training was however, put on hold as he decided to try-out for the Olympics. When he realized he couldn’t attain an Olympic qualification, he decided to train in MMA and eventually became a full-time fighter. He would earn his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in May 2015.

Weidman made his professional fight debut in 2009 during Louis Neglia’s Ring of Combat 23, where he defeated his opponent Reubem Lopes in the first round via kimura submission. He continued on and won his next fights in Ring of Combat, earning invitations from numerous prospects, but he waited for an offer by the UFC and quickly accepted, and which was the basis of his net worth.

His first fight in the UFC was during 2011 against Alessio Sakara, which he won via unanimous decision. He won his next fights, defeating Tom Lawlor with a submission in UFC 139 and also defeating both Demian Maia and Mark Munoz during 2012. After his fight with Mark he went for a one year break from fighting due to Hurricane Sandy and an injury he sustained. He returned in July 2013 to face Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight title, Weidman knocked out Silva during the second round ending the champion’s streak and solidifying Chris as one of the best fighters of the Middleweight division. Later in the year, they fought in a rematch with Chris winning via Technical Knock Out or TKO after he blocked a low kick by Silva which broke his leg.

After the Silva series, Chris defended his belt against Lyoto Machida, winning the battle via unanimous decision. His next match would be in 2015 as he had to recuperate from injuries. He eventually fought in UFC 187 against Victor Belfort and won. During the fourth defence of his title against Luke Rockhold, he lost the match via a TKO in the fourth round and both of them were awarded Fight of the Night honors. They are scheduled for a rematch in June 2016.

For his personal life, Chris has been married to Marivi since 2009, and they have three children. He is also a Christian. Weidman took some time off to volunteer and help rebuild homes for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, working with the non-profit group Staten Strong.
