Macy attended and matriculated from Allegany High School in 1968. Afterwards, he would attend Bethany College to study veterinary medicine. He admits that he wasn’t very good at academics, and later decided to go to Goddard College where he found a liking for theatre. He started working in productions such as “The Three Penny Opera” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” while he was there.
After graduation, William moved to Chicago, and initially worked as a bartender. There he founded St. Nicholas Theater Company with David Mamet and started in plays such as “The Water Engine” and “American Buffalo”. After Chicago, Macy moved to Los Angeles and then New York in 1980, where he would perform in over 50 Broadway and off-Broadway shows. He used the name W.H.
