Vernon Jordan was a son of Vernon E. Jordan Sr. and Mary Jordan , andwas raised in Atlanta’s segregated society with his brother. Vernon finished Tobias Howard High School as an honor graduate, but because of race stereotyping he had a lot of problems in finding a job and earning money for college. He collected money as a chauffeur for Mayor Robert Maddox, and eventually in 1957 he graduated from DePauw University in Indiana. After that he enrolled at the Howard University School of Law, and obtained his degree in 1960.

After finishing his education, Vernon returned to Georgia, and joined Donald L. Hollowell, a civil rights activist, in his firm, and his first venture as a civil rights activist was quite successful; they sued University of Georgia for racial discrimination, and won the suit, and two African American students, Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton E. Holmes, were admitted to the university. He then left the private sector and became Georgia field director for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and then joined the Southern Regional Council, and later the Voter Education Project.

Ten years after he started building his name, Vernon became the executive director of the United Negro College Fund, and in 1971 he was appointed as president of the National Urban League, and served in that position for ten full years, which increased his net worth by a large margin. In 1981, Vernon joined the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, in the position of legal counsel, which also added to his net worth.

In 1992, he became a close adviser to then US President Bill Clinton, and served in that position during his eight-year tenure.
In 2000 he was appointed as the senior managing director with Lazard Freres & Co. LLC, and has been serving in that position ever since, increasing further is net worth. Furthermore, he serves on the board of directors for several companies, including Asbury Automotive Group, Dow Jones & Company, American Express and J.C. Penney Corporation, Xerox, and Corning, among others.

In 1980s, Vernon was shot and seriously wounded, fortunately, he managed to recover, and his attacker, Joseph Paul Franklin, was arrested two years after the murder attempt.

Vernon is a life time member of the Bilderberg Group and Council on Foreign Relations. He won Barnard Medal of Distinction award in 1983 which is a highest honor form Barnard College. In 2001 NAACP awarded him Spingarn Medal for his lifetime achievement.
