Valentin is the son of Aleksandr “Sasha” Chmerkovskiy and Larisa Chmerkovskaya; his older brother Maksim is also a professional dancer. The family moved to the US in 1994, and his father and brother opened dance studio in New Jersey aimed at young clients, and he was among the first students. Valentin later graduated with a degree in Business Management.
His first appearance in “Dancing with the Stars” happened in 2006, when he partnered with Valeriya Kozharinova, a student of his brother. Two seasons later, he once again appeared on the show, and was obliged to compete against his brother in a dance-off. He had a couple more appearances, including in season 10, performing a theme with a country and western basis with his brother, Snejana Petrova and Edyta Śliwińska, before making his competitive debut in season 13, when he was paired with model/actress Elisabetta Canalis. The pair was eliminated in the second round, and ended on the 11th place. Since then he has appeared in every season of the show, and has managed to win 20th installment, when he danced with actress/singer Rumer Willis. In the interim, he had several notable results, including 3rd place in the 15th season with Kelly Monaco, 2nd place with singer, actress and dancer Zendaya, and 3rd place with actress Janel Parrish.
