After finishing high school, he wanted to attend Ohio State University, however, he received a scholarship from the University of Louisville, where he continued playing football, and became one of the best players of the college, winning the Missouri Valley Conference player award in 1970 and 1972. Also, he was the leader in tackles for all three seasons, 1970 until 1972.

After three unforgettable seasons at Louisville, Tom entered the 1973 NFL Draft, in which he was selected by the Denver Broncos in the fourth round; this marked the beginning of his professional career, and increase in his net worth.

He played for the Broncos until 1986, when he retired, in the position of linebacker. Tom ended his career with 20 interceptions, 13 sacks and 3 touchdowns. During his career, Tom won several awards and recognitions, both as part of the team and as an individual; he was selected three times for the Pro-Bowl game, consecutively from 1975 until 1977, and was three times All-Pro, also from 1975 until 1977. Furthermore, he was named in the Denver Broncos 50th Anniversary Team.
After retirement, Tom assumed the job of a football analyst, and worked on shows such as “NFL Countdown”, “Monday Night Countdown”, “NFL Primetime”, and “Sunday NFL Countdown”, all of which added a lot to his net worth.
