Tom Bosley was a son of Benjamin and Dora Bosley, and was of Jewish religion although often played Catholic priests in his career. He served in the United States Navy during the WWII, and when the war was over, he went to DePaul University in Chicago, where he made his stage debut in 1947. Bosley had his first role in TV movie in 1955, when he appeared in “Alice in Wonderland”, but his major role came in 1959 in the Broadway musical “Fiorello!” playing the mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia and winning a Tony Award for his performance.
Bosley’s first feature film was the comedy-drama “Love with the Proper Stranger” (1963) starring Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen. By the end of the 60’s, he had played roles in “The World of Henry Orient” (1964) with Peter Sellers, Bud Yorkin’s “Divorce American Style” (1967), “The Secret War of Harry Frigg” (1968) with Paul Newman, and “Yours, Mine and Ours” (1968) starring Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda. His first notable role in a series came on “The Debbie Reynolds Show” (1969-1970), in which Bosley appeared in 18 episodes.
Tom was cast in numerous TV movies and series during the ’70s, including his voice-over for a lead in “Wait ‘Til Your Father Gets Home” (1972-1974), and in his most memorable role in “Happy Days” (1974-1984), appearing in 255 episodes. In the ’80s, Bosley’s notable performances were in the TV series “Murder, She Wrote” (1984-1988), and s the lead character in “ The Father Dowling Mysteries” (1989-1991). He wasn’t quite as busy in the ’90s, mostly appearing in one or two episodes in numerous series, but he was more frequent in the 2000’s in movies such as “Returning Mickey Stern” (2002), “Mary Christmas” (2002), “Hidden Places” (2006), and “Charlie & Me” (2008). His last film was the comedy “The Back-up Plan” (2010) starring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O’Loughlin.

Regarding his personal life, Tom Bosley was married to Jean Eliot from 1962 until her death in 1978, and had one child with her. He later married Patricia Carr, and they were together from 1980 to his death in 2010. Bosley died from a staph infection complications in October 2010, in Rancho Mirage, California, aged 83, and was also battling a lung cancer at the time.
