Snoop Lion is the middle child of Vernell Varnado, who was a Vietnam veteran and musician, and Beverly Tate, but as his father left the family, he was named after his stepfather, Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Sr. He earned his nickname “Snoop” from his appearance when he was a child. He started to sing and play the piano at the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church, and when he was in sixth grade, he transferred to rap music. In his teens, Snoop Lion was very problematic and had a number of legal issues, as he was a member of the gang Rollin’ 20 Crips in the East side of Long Beach. Right after he matriculated from the Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1989, he was arrested for cocaine possession, and was in-and-out of jail during the next three years. After that he began to record homemade tapes with several friends, and in no time his career began.

He auditioned for Dr. Dre, who recognized his talents and engaged Snoop to work on his album “The Chronic”. Concurrently, Snoop also worked on his debut album, entitled “Doggystyle”, which came out in 1993, and which reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 chart, achieving four time platinum status with sales of more than seven million. Encouraged by this immense success, Snoop continued to produce music, and his second album, “Tha Doggfather”, which came out three years later, also topped the charts, and achieved double platinum status, increasing Snoop`s net worth by a large margin.
