Flack grew up in Arlington, Virginia and started taking piano lessons at an early age, which enabled her to receive a piano scholarship to Howard University in Washington D.C., where she became an assistant conductor of the university choir. After graduating in 1958 with a B.A. in music education, she taught music and English in Farmville, North Carolina.
