Robert was raised and trained by his father Ruben Guerrero who was a former amateur champion. He and his brothers trained in boxing as they were growing up, and he quickly showed potential. He turned professional at the age of 18 and had his first fight in 2001 against Alejandro Cruz which he won via unanimous decision. He would go on a winning streak and win the WBC NABF Featherweight title against Cesar Figueroa in December 2004. He defended it successfully twice, but was then defeated by Gamallel Diaz in an upset split decision. He shook off this loss by defeating Sandros Marcos, earning him a rematch against Diaz who he knocked out during their fight. This win set him up to fight against the IBF champion Eric Aiken, who he defeated via technical knockout.
