Talking about his professional career as a coach, he started as an assistant coach for the college team Western Kentucky in 1987. The following year, Ryan took the position of an outside linebackers coach in another college team, that of Ohio State University. Then, he settled down in Nashville, Tennessee, where he spent five seasons from 1989 to 1993, training the college football team The Tennessee State Tigers. At first he held the position of running backs coach (1989 – 1991), then linebackers coach (1992) and finally, he worked as defensive line coach (1993).
