Richard Walter Jenkins was born on the 10th November 1925, in Pontrhydyfen, Wales, and was an actor, considered one of the most important English-speaking stage actors, but became more widely known through films, as he participated in numerous feature films, and gained international stardom in the 1960s, eventually being nominated for an Oscar seven times. Richard was active in the entertainment industry from 1943 to 1984.

To begin with, Richard Burton’s mother died when he was two years old; he was one of thirteen children, and as his father’s life was marked by alcoholism, the large family lived in poverty. After the death of his mother Burton was raised by his sister Cecilia. He studied in Oxford and played in the student theatre, then served in the RAF for three years as a navigator, still pursuing his acting career when possible.. He was considered a good actor for Shakespearean plays, and at 19 made his debut in London’s West End. In 1949, he made his breakthrough at the Globe Theatre in a production directed by Sir John Gielgud.

In 1952, he played in his first Hollywood film, “My Cousin Rachel”, opposite Olivia de Haviland, after which he was nominated for an Oscar for the first time. During the decade, his reputation grew through a variety of films ranging from war to romantic dramas.

In 1963, he starred in the film “Cleopatra” (1963) with Elizabeth Taylor, after which they became the best known couple of actors, and the highest paid actor in the sector in 1960s. Then followed “The Sandpiper” (1965), and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1966) among others. Without the participation of Taylor, Burton landed significant roles in the films “Becket” (1964), “The Night of the Iguana” (1964) and “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” (1965). In the 1970s, Burton stepped increasingly into films that were commercial and earned him higher salary. In 1983, he starred the last time together with Elizabeth Taylor in the theatre comedy “Private Lives of Noel Coward”.

His last film “Ellis Island” was released in 1984; it was based on the novel written by George Orwell. Shortly after completion of filming he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died.

It is worth saying that although he was nominated for an Oscar seven times, unfortunately he did not win any. In the summer of 1970, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.

Finally, in the personal life of the actor, he was married to Sybil Williams (1949 – 1963), with whom he had two daughters, one of whom is Kate Burton, also an actress. After a very public relationship with the actress Elizabeth Taylor, to whom he was married from 1964-1974 and 1975-1976, he was married to Suzy Miller (1976 – 1982). Burton’s fourth wife was the publicist Sally Hay, whom he was married with from 1983 until his death. He had two more daughters whom he adopted, one from Taylor’s previous marriage, and one with her. He died on the 5th August 1984 in Celigny, Geneva Switzerland – he had been suffering from several medical problems for many years, brought about by his intemperate consumption of alcohol and smoking. His grave is in the old cemetery of Céligny.
