Ray started his racing career when he was 26 years old, and also worked with the International Race of Champions as a chassis specialist. He had a terrible car crash accident at Flemington during 1993 season and his brain stem was badly damaged, which led to permanent problems with depth perception. Ray doesn’t remember the accident very well, but it forced him to end his career as a driver.

He worked with NASCAR driver Alan Kulwicki in 1991, but left the post after a few weeks due to entirely different personalities. In 1992, Ray started his collaboration with Jeff Gordon who was a Ford driver at the time, and he was the Hendrick Motorsports crew chief from 1992 to 1999. Patrick Carpentier, Bill Elliott, Elliott Sadler, Casey Atwood, Jeremy Mayfield, Erin Crocker, Kasey Kahne and Chase Miller have been the drivers of Evernham’s team. George N. Gillett, Jr purchased the majority of shares of the team in 2007, but Evernham sued him in 2011 because Gillett failed to fulfill his co-owner duties, and the suit was settled in 2012 outside the court for an undisclosed fee.
