Wayne, Indiana, where she attended South Side High School. Upon matriculation in 1970, Nancy enrolled at Indiana University Bloomington, from which she graduated with a BA degree in Microbiology, after which she earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Nancy continued with medical training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pennsylvania, in pediatrics and otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat). After a while, she moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, and joined surgical staff at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1983, with specialization in throat and neck cancers. A year later her career on television began, when she joined the KATV, which is affiliate of the ABC.
