Mike Ness spent his childhood in Orange County, California, to where his family relocated when he was a child. His musical career began in the 1970s, when he became involved in the punk rock scene after being kicked out of house by his father at only 15 years of age. He played in several bands, and in 1978 formed the punk rock band Social Distortion, alongside Casey Royer, Frank Agnew and his brother Rikk. However, Frank and Rikk left the group, and Mike brought his friend Dennis Danell to play bass guitar.
