Due to difficulties in providing for Amaro, her parents sent her to the British Virgin Islands where she would live with her grandmother. She started singing at a young age and would even sing around her house using a hairbrush as a microphone. At the age of 11, she was determined to pursue a singing career though never really entered any competitions. Melanie started performing at local events, weddings, and churches. She attended Althea Elmore Stout High School and then moved to Florida, attending Plantation High School.

After matriculating in 2010, she was persuaded by her mother to audition for the first season of “The X Factor USA” the following year. She sang Beyonce Knowles‘ “Listen” and eventually became part of the top 32 finalists. Simon Cowell became her mentor, and she sang Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There” but fell short of the top 16. However, she was visited by Cowell two weeks later, bringing her back to the competition as he felt that it was a mistake not including her. She would go on to advance as part of Cowell’s team, and in December took part in the finals; she battled against Chris Rene and Josh Krajcik, eventually winning the competition. She became the show’s youngest contestant to win at the age of 19, and acquired the aforementioned contract, which is considered the largest guaranteed prize in television history. She worked with L.A. Reid at Epic Records, and then made her first appearance in a Pepsi commercial.

The commercial featured her singing a cover of “Respect” alongside Elton John, Annie Ilonzeh, and Flavor Flav. The song would go on and reach the third spot on the Billboard Dance/Club Chart during 2012, and she then released her single “Don’t Fail Me Now”, and later performed “Long Distance” during an episode of “The X Factor USA”. After the songs failed to chart, people speculated that she was dropped by Epic Records but that wasn’t the case, although her album “Truly” was rescheduled but never released. In 2013, she performed in Indonesia for the television special entitled “X Factor Around the World”, then Amaro made her theatre debut in “You’re Never Alone”.

In 2014, Melanie released “Fuel My Fire” on Soundcloud to promote an EP of the same name, without Sony or Epic being credited.
