During the second half of the season, he didn’t perform as well, but despite his inconsistencies, still managed to finish the season strongly.

With all the criticisms on his play, he started worked on his weaknesses during training and improved greatly during 2011, becoming the leader in several statistics for the team. He was named to the All-Star game, and became one of the top players in the league, receiving multiple awards. During the next two years he would struggle due to numerous injuries and was performing poorly. He was put back into the disabled list and only played a few games, mostly in the minor leagues as part of his rehab. At the end of 2014, he was traded to the San Diego Padres despite issues with arthritis in both hips, but he still performed well in the 2015 season.
