Although born in Ardmore, he and his parents moved to Springerville, Arizona when he was seven, as his parents had bought a ranch. The following year Mark broke his leg so badly that doctors predicted that he wouldn`t be able to even walk again; fortunately Mark managed to fully recover, and when he turned 12 he started competing in team-roping events.
He went to the Round Valley High School and, encouraged by his father, Mark began playing football. He had several notable results, but still couldn`t attract some of the prestigious universities, and in the end enrolled at Eastern Arizona Junior College, where he played for the men`s football team and earned All-America honors.
