Luke Rockhold was raised in an athletic family by father Steve Rockhold, a former professional basketball player in Europe, and his mother, who was akeen tennis player; his brother is Matt Rockhold, a professional surfer. Due to his upbringing, he also became active in different sports, including judo, in which he started training at the age of six. However, when he was 10 years old, he quit it and later joined the wrestling team while he attended Soquel High School, and parallel with that he was taking Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes. He then enrolled at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, where he found himself in mixed martial arts. Thanks to his skills, Luke was spotted by AKA head coach Javier Mendez, who recruited him as a potential future champion.
