Kate moved to Leeds after graduation to appear as Abigail Williams in The Crucible at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. She had already shot her scenes for the BBC adaptation of Wolf Hall, in which she acted as Henry VIII’s ill-fated wife, Jane Seymour, who gave him his only legitimate male heir.
After this Kate landed a part in ITV’s War & Peace series, where she played Lise Bolkonskaya, the spouse of James Norton’s Andrei Bolkonsky, who was abandoned while pregnant so that her husband could go to war.
Following this, she played Linda Shelby, the wife of Maverick Arthur, in Peaky Blinders, in front of veteran actors Cillian Murphy and Helen McCrory.
She played Venetia Scott, the secretary of Winston Churchill (played by John Lithgow) in The Crown, but the death of the Great Smog meant that her tenure in the show was short.
Kate played Tillie in My Mother and Other Strangers, a Northern Irish series, before starting work at Downton Abbey, where she rose up the ranks to royalty.
