To begin with, Justin was given his first guitar at the age of nine, then being 15, Hayward bought his first Gibson guitar, which he earned by playing with local bands in various clubs. In 1965, Marty Wilde was looking for a guitarist, and Hayward responded to the announcement and got the job. At 17, he signed a contract with Lonnie Donegan as a songwriter, but admitted later that he had regretted this move. In 1966, Mike Pinder contacted Hayward after hearing his demo. A few days later, Hayward replaced Denny Laine’a in The Moody Blues, at the same time as bassist John Lodge joined the band, replacing Clint Warwick. The arrival of new members brought great benefits, making The Moody Blues one of the most popular bands in the UK; in 1967, they released a series of successful singles like “Tuesday Afternoon”, “Voices in the Sky”, “Nights in White Satin” and many others, contributing to the highly successful album “Days of Future Past”. He is the author of 20 out of 27 singles of The Moody Blues released since that point.

In 1972, the members of the band decided to part ways. However, Hayward, John Lodge and producer Tony Clarke still worked together, creating music similar to the accomplishments of The Moody Blues. Together they released the album “Blue Jays” (1975), and continued to work in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1978, Hayward released the solo album “Songwriter” which was followed by his album “Night Flight” in 1980. In the ’80s, Hayward performed on and composed for television, to give examples: the song “It Will Not Be Easy” used in the television series “Star Cops”, “Something Evil, Something Dangerous” for the film “Howling IV: The Original Nightmare” and others. In 1985, he released another solo album, “Moving Mountains”, and in 1989 the album “Classic Blue”, which included his own versions of songs written by other songwriters. “The View from the Hill” was released in 1996, and two years later, he recorded the live album “Live In San Juan Capistrano”. In 2003, alongside other singers and an orchestra from Frankfurt, he recorded the album “Justin Hayward and Friends Perform the Hits of the Moody Blues”. Interestingly Hayward originally has not been paid for participation in the recording, which was resolved in court.
