Gatlin grew up in Pensacola, Florida and attended the Woodham High School where he was the fastest child in the school team. He was spotted by the coaches from the University of Tennessee in 2000, who then offered him an athletic scholarship seeing his potential as a sprinter. During his schooling at the university, Justin won NCAA sprint titles six consecutive times, and also led the university team “Volunteers” to two NCAA titles. In 2001 he was initially banned from the international competition for two years after being tested positive for amphetamines. However, he claimed that the test found attention deficit disorder medications which he had been taking since childhood, and in 2002 the IAAF resecinded the ban.
By the time he was 19, Justin had become a professional sportsman and Nike shoe manufacturer awarded him an endorsement contract which was one of the largest in professional track and field. The year 2004 was one of the most successful for Gatlin, as he won the gold medal in the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in the 100-meter sprint. His finish was the third fastest in Olympic history and in addition, he won a silver medal in the 4-by-100m relay and a bronze in the 200 meter race.
The following year, Justin confirmed his sprinting dominance by winning gold in the 100-meter race at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Gatlin then set a world record in May 2006, during the qualifying rounds of the IAAF Super Tour in Doha, Qatar, where he finished the 100-meter sprint in 9.77 seconds. However, in July the same year, another controversial event happened, when Gatlin was tested positive for testosterone and suspended from international competition. Again he denied having used any of the drugs, but settled for an eight-year ban from track and field in order to avoid a lifetime ban, by cooperating with authorities. This event resulted in the annulment of his 2006 world record. By the end of the next year, his ban was reduced to four years.
During the following four years, Justin worked with teams in the US, but although his running drill numbers were stunning, he refused to sign with any of the teams. His training regime was moderated, and he gained weight, reaching 200 pounds from his original training weight of 182 pounds. Gatlin made his track and field circuit comeback in August 2010, by winning the 100-meter races during a tour of Estonia and Finland. In the following two years he made a slow but steady progress, improving his 100-meter times with every race. Gatlin participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he won bronze in the 100m final, and a year later he even beat world record holder Usain Bolt and won the 100 meters at the Golden Gala meet in Rome Italy. Ever since, Justin has been back on the track and successfully maintaining his athletic career.
In his personal life, although he hasn’t been linked to any particular girlfriend, Justin did become a father in May 2010 when his son was born, although he did not stay in a relationship with the boy’s mother. Other than this, not much is known about his personal life.
