Josh started to get recognition for his basketball skills during his time at John McEachern High, and before his senior year he transferred to Oak Hill Academy where he played with Rajon Rondo. Before his transfer, he also played in an AAU team includingf Dwight Howard and Randolph Morris. His senior year at Oak Hill was strong and he helped the team to an undefeated 38-0 record. He was considered the number one small forward by Rivals.com but opted to forgo college basketball to enter the NBA draft.
Smith joined the 2004 NBA draft and was selected as the 17th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks. He performed well during his rookie year and eventually became the Slam Dunk Contest champion, earning three perfect scores. He also became well known for his defense, and had reached the 500 block mark during 2007, the youngest player to do so in the NBA. He continued this record into 2010 with 1,000 blocked shots in his career, still the youngest player to achieve this target.
