Lithgow had parents who were very familiar with the industry, with his mother being a retired actress and his father being a producer/director of McCarter Theatre. During his time at college, he became set on pursuing a career in acting, and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

In 1973, John made his Broadway debut in a production of “The Changing Room”, receiving Tony and Drama Desk awards for his performance there, which led to his next production “My Fat Friend”. He then continued his career with productions of “A Memory of Two Mondays” opposite Meryl Streep, and “M. Butterfly”. Even with his film and television career, he still continued to make regular stage appearances such as in “Sweet Smell of Success” in 2002. In 2007, he took part in a production of “Twelfth Night”, and during the following years in “All My Sons”, and “Mr & Mrs Fitch”. One of his most recent stage performances was in a revival of “A Delicate Balance”, which stars Glenn Close, and Clare Higgins.

His film career also started in the 1970s, most notably 1979’s “All That Jazz”. A few of his best performances include “Terms of Endearment”, and “The World According to Garp” which got him Academy Award nominations. He continued to make appearances in films such as “Footloose”, and “Ricochet” opposite Denzel Washington. He also had a small role in “Dreamgirls” and became a lead in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. Lithgow’s also well known to be the voice of the “Shrek” character Lord Farquaad, as well as voicing the character in the theme park attraction “Shrek 4-D”.

In between all of his productions and films, Lithgow has had many well-known television roles. One of his most memorable performances was in “3rd Rock From the Sun” as the character Dick Solomon, winning three Primetime Emmy Awards during the course of the show. He also did commercials for the Campbell Soup Company, and made a cameo on “30 Rock”. He won a Golden Globe Award for his performance as the serial killer Arthur Mitchell in “Dexter” and he also made a guest appearance in “How I Met Your Mother” as Barney Stinson’s father.

John has also been involved in other endeavors including podcasts, children’s books and albums. He’s also heard on radio, doing productions such as dramatic readings.

For his personal life, it is known that John married Jean Taynton in 1966 and the marriage lasted until 1980. The following year he married Mary Yeager. He has three children, one of whom is Ian Lithgow who made regular appearances on “3rd Rock from the Sun”.
