Jim went to the Lutheran High School North in St Louis, from which he matriculated in 1972. After finishing high school, he enrolled at the Central Missouri State University, and graduated with a degree in industrial safety four years later, also palying baseball for the University team. Following graduation, he found employment in the insurance business, however, after four years later he moved to Houston, and after another four years, he founded the Eagle USA Airfreight with a loan from his sister, which operated as a freight logistics business. Little by little his company grew, and he changed the name to Eagle Global Logistics. After a while he changed the name again to the EGL Inc. and expanded company`s operations to information service business and supply chain management.
However, in 2007 his company merged with the CEVA Logistics; Jim wanted to buy out his shares, however, he wasn`t satisfied with the stock prices, and so took the profit from his company and started another one, Crane Worldwide Logistics which opened for business in 2008, and in no time became one of the best global providers of customized transportation and logistics services. Through the company, he also owns and chairs Champion Energy Holdings LLC. Also, he is the director of the Fort Dearborn Life Insurance Company. Furthermore, Jim started the Crane Capital Group, through which he has invested in such companies as Western Gas Holdings, LLC, among other companies, and the successful business operations of which have largely increased his net worth.
In 2011, Jim bought the baseball team Houston Astros for $680 million; he managed to restore the success of the franchise, bringing them into the MLB league in 2013. The success of the team has added further funds to his net worth, as well as lifting his reputation.
