After matriculation from high school, he chose the University of Georgia Tech, but spent only one season there before moving to the NBA. Despite being a freshman, he was one of the most remembered bases in the university after Stephon Marbury (1995). He led the Yellow Jackets to the NCAA tournament. He averaged 14.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists. He was named Rookie of the Week three times in the ACC. He scored his maximum of 29 points in the game against Florida State at the beginning of 2007.

Talking about his professional career, Crittenton was chosen 19th in the1st round of the NBA draft 2007 by the LA Lakers, then traded alongside Kwame Brown and Aaron McKie to Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Pau Gasol.
