Jamal attended Douglass High School and was a letterman for both track and football. He performed well in both sports and became a top rated prospect for college football after showcasing amazing statistics during his senior year. He played fullback at first before transitioning into the school’s starting running back.

He then played with the University of Tennessee, and became one of the all-time top rushers in school history. He would go on and perform well during his three year stay, but was hampered by an injury in 1998. In 2000, after returning from an injury the previous year, he entered the 2000 NFL Draft and was selected by the Baltimore Ravens.
