Iman Shumpert spent his childhood with three brothers in Chicago, the son of Odis, who works as an insurance broker, and L’Tanya, a professor of art and design at Columbia College. He started playing basketball while attending Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School in Oak Park, Illinois. Later, he continued to play at Oak Park and River Forest High School, where he excelled and became a first team All-State player. He led his high school team to three conference titles, and received the MVP trophy as junior and as well as senior. Furthermore, he was one of the top 30 senior players, as he was ranked as No. 15 by Scout.com and No. 26 by the Rivals.com.
After high school, Iman enrolled at Georgia Tech University, where he continued to develop his basketball skills. However, in his second year of studies, Iman tore the meniscus in his left knee, and underwent surgery which kept him of the team for six games. During the 2010-2011 season, Shumpert was the best player on his team, averaging 17.3 points per game, and was also the leader in assists and rebounds. Following the season`s end, Iman was named to the All-ACC second team, and was also a part of the ACC all-defensive team.
He forwent his final year of studies, and entered the 2011 NBA Draft, in which he was selected as the 17th overall pick by the New York Knicks, which marked the beginning of his professional career as a basketball player. He signed a rookie contract with the Knicks, which certainly added to his net worth, however, Shumpert didn`t see much playing time, since several injuries kept him sidelined for the most part of his time with the Knicks.
