Herb Alpert was brought up in a Jewish family, in the Boyle Heights section of Eastside Los Angeles by his parents Tillie and Louis Alpert, a mandolin player, so he showed an interest in music from the age of eight, when he started learning to play the trumpet and attend dance lessons. He attended Fairfax High School, after which he served in the US Army. When he returned home, Herb enrolled at the University of Southern California, and continued to pursue his music career, as he became a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band.
