He is a record producer, probably best known for being the co-founder of A&M Records, one of the most popular recording labels in the world, together with Jerry Moss. Herb Alpert was brought up in a Jewish family, in the Boyle Heights section of Eastside Los Angeles by his parents Tillie and Louis Alpert, a mandolin player, so he showed an interest in music from the age of eight, when he started learning to play the trumpet and attend dance lessons. He attended Fairfax High School, after which he served in the US Army. When he returned home, Herb enrolled at the University of Southern California, and continued to pursue his music career, as he became a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band.

Herb`s professional career began in 1957, when he and songwriter Rob Weerts signed for Keen records, and started writing songs. The two are credited for songs such as “”Wonderful World”, and “Baby Talk”, among others, which became top 20 hits. He then began his career as a singer under the name Dore Alpert for the RCA Records, however, he and Jerry Moss founded Carnival records, and later changed the name to A&M Records in 1962, through which he has released the majority of his albums, but has also signed and collaborated with such artists as Liza Minnelli, The Carpenters, and Janet Jackson among others. He and Moss sold the company to PolyGram records in 1987 for around $500 million, which increased his net worth by a large margin.

His career as a singer brought fame to him, as he released more than 20 albums, some of which achieved platinum and gold status, which increased his net worth by a large margin. For the major part of his career however, he was the founder of the band Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.
