When she was 15, she started playing on the International Tennis Federation tour, and in 1999, Pennetta won the French Junior Open in doubles with her Italian partner Roberta Vinci, but failed to enter the main draw of a WTA Tour event until 2002 when she appeared at the Cellular South Cup in Memphis, Tennessee.
