Dawn Staley went to Murrell Dobbins Tech High School in Philadelphia, where she was the basketball player of the year in her senior year. Later, she studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, from 1988 to 1992, helping her team to reach four NCAA Tournaments, three Final Fours and one National Championship game. After her graduation in 1992, Staley moved to Europe where she played basketball in France, Italy, and Spain, before coming back home to join the Richmond Rage in 1996.

In 1999, Staley was selected as the 9th overall pick by the Charlotte Sting where she played from 1999 to 2005 and led them to the WNBA Championship game in 2001. Staley was traded to the Houston Comets in 2005, and she retired after that season.

Staley was an important member of the US National Team during the ’90’s and 2000’s, and she won three golden Olympic medals in 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney, and 2004 Athens. Dawn also won the Universiade in Sheffield 1992, and bronze in the World Cup in Sydney 1994.
Her coaching career started in 2000 at Temple University, and she stayed there for eight seasons with the record of 172 wins and 80 defeats (.683). In 2008, Staley moved to South Carolina where she had even better results, reaching the NCAA Sweet Sixteen on three occasions (2011-12, 2013-14, and 2015-16), and the NCAA Final Four (2014-15). Dawn is still coaching at South Carolina, and after eight seasons there, she has a record of 188 wins and 72 defeats (.712). Her net worth is still rising.
