In 1989, he was the starting pitcher for the Rochester Red Wings in International League. These were a modest start to his net worth.

In 1992 he began with the Phillies, and in 1993 he led them to a surprise final victory of the National League facing the Atlanta Braves, who had won the two previous titles. The following season, he was credited with 22 victories (the largest number of wins in a season at the time) for only 6 losses. He shared the award for best player of the World Series with Randy Johnson, which the Diamondbacks won. His 2003 season was interrupted by two periods on the disabled list as he underwent an appendectomy and suffered a broken hand while fielding a hit. Regardless, his net worth was rising steadily.
