Craig Graham Sager, Sr. studied at Northwestern University, and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelors degree in speech. During his time at Northwestern, Sager was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and also served as the school’s mascot Willie the Wildcat.
Sager started his career as a reporter for WXLT in Sarasota, Florida in 1972. He stayed there for several years, then moved to CNN in 1981, and covered the baseball playoffs, working as a co-anchor of “CNN Sports Tonight”, and also as an anchor of College Football Scoreboard from 1982 to 1985. Sager covered Goodwill games for TBS in 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998. He also broadcast events such as Pan American Games, 1990 FIFA World Cup, and Nordic skiing and curling at the 1992 Winter Olympics.

While working for TNT, Sager covered the 1999 Tournament of the Americas Olympic Qualifying Basketball Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, 2002 World Championships of Basketball, and also appeared on several occasions on NBA TV during the 2008–09 NBA season. On TBS, Sager worked as a sideline reporter for Pac-10/Big 12 college football coverage from 2002 to 2006, for the 50th annual Delchamps Senior Bowl from Ladd Memorial Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, and the 1998 and 2000 Micron PC Bowl, formerly known as the Carquest Bowl. Sager made a brief switch to the NBC in 1999, when he was loaned to work as a field reporter for both baseball National League Championship Series and World Series. Most recently, Sager teamed up with Doris Burke in covering Game 6 of the NBA Finals in 2016 between Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.

Regarding his personal life, Craig Sager is married to a former Chicago Bulls dancer Stacy, and the pair has two sons. Sager also has three children from previous marriage, one of them is Craig Jr. who is a wide receiver at the University of Georgia. In 2014, Sager was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and was forced to miss the entire 2014 NBA Playoffs. All the fellow reporters from the league supported him during treatment, and his son’s bone marrow helped him to enter into remission. However, leukaemia returned in March 2016, and Sager underwent bone marrow surgery at the end of July.
